On the last day before the summer solstice, I took my first photograph in 265 days. Cycling out of the city, I rode along the Queensway toward Mississauga. Saw what was left of the sun rising, travelled light with only my iPhone.

The Leap Home, Spadina subway station (5:51 pm)

After a year of near isolation, I returned to arguably one of the most fascinating areas of Toronto—Chinatown. I arrived about 4:00 pm as I had planned to photograph the neon stores and restaurants at sundown. Partway through the shoot, it began to drizzle with no promise of letting up. My shoot was cut short. In 1986, John Carpenter directed Big Trouble in Little China. Near the end of the film one of the characters says, “China is in the heart”. Wet, tired, masked, face-shielded, sitting on a bench in the Spadina subway station waiting for a train, I was home.
